Learning on
Lake Memphremagog
The Memphremagog Science & Education Center (MemSEC) works to develop an understanding of the cultural and natural history of Lake Memphremagog. We emphasize observation, inquiry, and connection. We recognize the critical role a healthy environment plays in the well-being of Newport and the entire Memphremagog Watershed - serving as a resource for all stakeholders of our region.

Our Programs
-
Our flagship Floating Classroom program was developed in partnership with the Rubenstein UVM School of Environment and Natural Resources, the Champlain SEA Grant, community partners, and local schools. This 2-hour program on board the Northern Star accommodates 30 students and 5 school staff. Students will: Gain hands-on experience with subject matter experts and a low teacher to student ratio. Gain experience with applied science techniques and learn about local conservation opportunities in our watershed. Gain inquiry-based strategies for multiple pathways for thinking and learning. Gain NGSS aligned, age-appropriate, culturally-relevant, instruction that will responsibly guide learners in their maritime journey.
And students get to ride in the helm with the Captain!
